Inhabiting the Lapland region, the Finnish Lapphund has been characterized as the breed that accompanied the Sami, or Lapp people for several thousand years.
The most important task of the Lappish dogs was to help guard and transport large reindeer herds to different pasturelands, according to the season. The herding and guarding tasks were varied, and the dogs had to be brave, cooperative, and independent.
The first breed definition dates back to 1945. The Finnish Lapponian Dogs of the time would now be considered large, long and narrow-headed. The oldest evidence of Lappish dog breeds has been dated in the Mesolithic period around 10,000 years ago. In that era, dogs were used for hunting wild reindeer and other wild game. The Sámi people inhabited a much broader area back then, and Sámi cultures are known to have existed as far south as near Lake Ladoga in Karelia. Dogs from Lapland were displayed as Lappish shepherd dogs at the first-ever Finnish dog show in 1892. Dog enthusiasts first became interested in them in the first decades of the 20th century, but the battles that raged in Lapland during the Second World War were disastrous for the dog population.
